It’s a fact that in today’s world people are
image conscious and beauty, vanity, looks are
of utmost priority . An average person spends
an amount of Rs.1000-Rs.5000/- per month on
beauty products or salon services, the
cosmetic industries around the world are
booming and flourishing. People are willing to
spend a fortune on maintaining themselves.
Nowadays there is an awareness among
people to maintain their Oral Hygiene than it
was a decade or so back. Due to this

Now, I’m going to list out some reasons which
causes staining and discoloration of teeth but
first we have to understand about staining and
discoloration.
In layman’s term staining is defined as
colored patches or dirty marks that are
not easily removed. It is of 2 types-
Extrinsic- This occurs when the outer
layer of the tooth (the enamel) is stained.
Coffee, wine, cola or other drinks or
foods can stain teeth. Smoking also
causes extrinsic stains. The second type
is Intrinsic — This is when the inner structure of the tooth (the dentin)
darkens or gets a yellow tint.
One of the most obvious reason for staining is
poor Oral Hygiene i.e. when people are not
taking adequate measures in maintaining their
teeth. Incorporating correct and proper
brushing techniques along with the use of
Dental Floss is more than enough for
maintaining oral hygiene.
But even after following these methods
people still complain of yellow stains. Now
one must understand that with growing age
the teeth don’t remain as white as they used
to be. The shine is lost and this is due to
gradual of enamel.
Use of certain drugs and mouthwashes cause
brownish staining of enamel.
So the above examples prove that staining of
teeth is inevitable and people of all age group
wish to have those “pearly white” teeth.
Now, I am going to list out certain methods for
whitening of teeth:-
The most convenient and affordable method is
by using Toothpastes. Toothpastes of various
brands are available in the market which help
to attain 3-4 shades whiter teeth.

Advanced procedure for whitening generally
requires the skills of a dentist who does a
procedure called “Bleaching”. Nowadays, a
dentist can provide bleaching kits to the
patient to take it home, But this entirely
depends on case to case.
So these Bleaching procedures use chemicals
and to avoid the harmful effects of these
chemicals people resort to “Natural” methods
for Whitening, like
Brushing with baking soda; though
scientifically it’s not proven that applying
baking soda has any effect in whitening.
Using Hydrogen Peroxide; also not proven
scientifically and there is an added
problem of safety as this substance is
dangerous and toxic to healthy tissues.
Using Apple Cider Vinegar; also not
scientifically proven and since it is an acid
it has a potential to erode enamel which is
Therefore one must understand that
yellowing of teeth is inescapable but there
are ways to curb this problem. It is entirely
up to a person to which method he resorts
to.
